Is Linkbaiting Good or Bad?
The term linkbait has been around at least since 2005.
Nick Wilson is sometimes credited with coining the term. It’s a great
way to lure visitors to your site, but some SEO authorities now claim
that it’s not such a good idea.
Content is still king, and if you write for your visitors and provide
them with great content, you might just be rewarded with the traffic.
Linkbaiting is often written about in negative terms. There is a lot
of debate about the term ‘linkbaiting’ and some of the practices that
people talk about it incorporating. Some argue strongly that it is
just a by-product of quality content, others argue that many linkbaiting
strategies border on spam, others seem to talk about linkbait as
being the answer to all web promotional problems so maximum SEO
companies are offering linkbaiting services.
Link bait
is good or bad depends upon the type of link baiting that you’re talking about. Some techniques that people use are just good standard blogging techniques while other things that people do in the pursuit of links are destructive to the blogging community. Like almost anything online, people use linkbaiting strategies for good and healthy purposes but also for dubious. We each need to think about our priorities, values and even ethics as we go about our blogging and explore this topic.
This is not a small question, because the answer determines where a site
owner must invest his time, money and effort. For those who are somewhat
lost right now, “linkbait” is content that has been created with the
intention of attracting lots of interest. Linkbait creators hope their
content is discussed and linked to it in lots of blogs, submitted to
social sites such as Digg, and so forth. Dedicated linkbait creators
even participate actively in social sites and post comments on blogs
to help spread the word.
Linkbait is good or bad is not a cut-and-dried issue. Linkbait should
be used, but it should be used properly, and with full awareness of its risks.
