Search Engines and Frames
Search engines have a tough time with frames. Using frames
can prevent them from finding pages within a Web site or cause
them to send visitors into a site without the proper frame
"context" being established. Both problems can be corrected,
with a little foresight by Webmasters.
Many search engines have difficulty indexing framed sites
(Excite, Lycos etc), and because of this, Internet marketeers
will advise you not to use frames. Frames can help navigation
of large sites though and hence they are prolific on the Internet.
So to ensure the search engine spiders index your framed site correctly
Fancy formatting of the page will be wasted effort, and will only
increase the file size. There are very few browsers that cannot
handle frames these days, so this page is just for the browser
stragglers. Therefore, just allow the non-frames browser to
display this page using default settings.
If you use frames in your Web site, you should use a "noframes" page.
But now, instead of telling your customers to get a frames capable
browser, use that section as a marketing tool. Search engines
will see your noframes page, and you can have a very targeted
message on the page.
The first 100 characters of text on your "noframes" page
should be a clear targeted description of your site. You
should use the same words as in your meta keywords, and
make sure that if it stands alone on a search engine it
will grab your readers and make them want to come to
your site, frames or not.
Usability experts, web site designers, and search
engine marketers consistently state that end users
prefer an unframed web site design to a framed site
design. Many of them, particularly the usability
experts, do not make blanket statements. They
genuinely test the effectiveness of both types
of designs and ultimately recommend the one
that is best for the audience.
If you find that a frameset layout works for you,
then by all means, use it. However, don't be afraid
to test whether or not your audience prefers the
unframed version of your site. You will probably
see an increase in traffic and corresponding sales.
