Microsoft Yahoo search deal could hit Europe – Microsoft's
deal with Yahoo under which the software maker's new Bing search engine will be
used to power Yahoo searches and Yahoo will sell premium advertising for both companies
could be expanded overseas. The 10-year search plan was originally announced in
July with hopes of hammering out a deal by October 27 but the companies missed the
deadline. The deal also faces scrutiny from the US Department of Justice, which
has begun studying if the broader competitive landscape would be impacted by the
proposed search engine tie-up. Both Microsoft and Yahoo trail in the search market
behind Google, which enjoyed a 71-percent market share in the US in October, according
to data from Hit wise. Yahoo had a 16 percent share and Microsoft's Bing was third
with just under 10 percent of the search market.

Dell to sell smartphone, starting in China, Brazil – Dell
Inc is entering the smart phone market, with its first device to launch in China
in late November, followed by Brazil toward the end of the year. But the world's
No. 3 personal computer maker gave scant details on the long-rumored new phone,
which is called Mini 3 and uses Google Inc's Android software. The company also
declined on Friday to give a timeline for launching smart phones in additional markets.
Dell is the latest tech name to bet on a smart phone market dominated by Apple Inc's
iPhone and Research in Motion's Blackberry. Dell said the Mini 3 will be targeted
at the consumer market rather than enterprises. China Mobile, the world's largest
mobile carrier by subscribers, and America Movil's Claro will carry the phone. Dell's
phone would also boost Google's fledgling mobile platform, which vies with Apple's
and Microsoft's platforms.

Microsoft open-sources .Net Framework – Microsoft announced
yesterday the release and open-sourcing of its .Net Micro Framework 4.0, which provides
a .Net-based development and execution environment for small devices. But the TCP/IP
stack and cryptography stack were omitted from the open source effort. Version 4.0
is available under an Apache 2.0 license. Microsoft still intends to remain actively
involved in development of the framework. As part of the open source move, developers
get access to source code for almost the entire product, including base class libraries
and CLR (Common Language Runtime) code. The libraries contain implementations of
primary functionality that managed applications call into for communications, system
functions like threading, UI and more.

Google Chrome OS available on BitTorrent – Google Chrome
OS, the operating system that Google released to open source last month, has been
compiled and posted for download on several file-sharing sites. The ready-to-run
Chrome OS has appeared on several peer-to-peer BitTorrent tracking sites, including
Mininova.org and Pirate Bay. The Gdgt website has also posted a free download of
the Chrome OS disk image. Users must create an account with the site to access the
download. The operating system, which Google bragged will be faster and more secure
than rivals when it ships late next year, can be run in a virtual environment using
a desktop application, such as those available from VMware or Sun Microsystems.
